As Google prepares to remove apps that haven’t been updated from the Play Store, the number of apps available could decline by nearly a third.
It’s no secret that Google and Apple are taking action against apps that have been neglected for more than a year. The total number of apps is 869,000 in Google’s case, and 650,000 in Apple’s. Users will be unable to download these apps until the developers make the necessary updates, according to CNET.
To ensure the safety of their customers, both organizations are implementing these procedures. Android and iOS updates, new APIs, or improved development methodologies have made it impossible for older apps to take advantage of these changes. Consequently, security issues in older programs exist that are absent in more recent versions.

There have been complaints about intentions to remove apps that haven’t been updated for two years. Indie game developers, for example, may find that once a simple game has been created and released, there is little else to do. Apple and Google’s recent steps have been interpreted by some developers as unfairly burdening them.
Independent developers may be concerned, but the decision is the right one for user safety regardless of what companies say.
